The Serra Verde Express belongs to the larger Higi Serv group, which has been acting to service the south and southeast regions of Brazil for more than 25 years. Higi Serv Group is composed of a group of companies: Higi Serv Cargo, Higi Serv Cleaning and Conservation, and Higi Serv Services, Obra Prima, and Usipar. In tourism, the acting companies are BWT Operator, Serra Verde Express, Paraná Viagens and Leva & Traz.
Adonai Aires de Arruda is the director and president of the Higi Serv Group, and has more than 5,000 employees. It is the largest company working for the cleanliness and conservation of the southern region of Brazil. In the middle of the '90s, Arruda created the Serra Verde Express to manage the centenary railroad. Arruda had help and the full support of his son, Adonai Arruda Filho, for his new endeavours. His son began work in the railway tourism segment in 1997, while his father continued working in the financial, marketing and attendance areas of the company.
Today, Serra Verde Express is the only company operating the centenary railroad stretch that runs between Curitiba and Paranagua, Parana. This railway plies through the largest area of Atlantic Forest preserved in the country, and also in the mountain region of Espirito Santo and the Pantanal of Mato Grosso do Sul. This track was previously operated by the federal government through the Federal Railway Network (RFFSA), and over the last ten years has become the second biggest tourism attraction in Parana.
The know-how acquired through their practices and experience with the railway system made Serra Verde Express anxious to embrace a new enterprise in the railroad industry and to launch the country's first luxury train, the Great Brazil Express in 2008. To ensure the success of this project, the entrepreneurs went to Belgium to partner with Transnico International, one of the most renowned international tourist agencies specializing in rail tours and incentive travel.
In May 2009, the company put into operation the charismatic Pantanal Train, after it had been out of service for more than a decade; this train operates between Campo Grande, Aquidauana and Miranda, Mato Grosso do Sul. And in January of 2010, Serra Verde Express began the operation of the Capixabas’ Mountain Train, which has the mission to promote tourism in the Route of the Sun and Mountain in the state of Espírito Santo.
